Contract Strategy for 2023: Opinions from Legal Tech Leaders

In our recently concluded webinar ‘3 Ps of Contracting for GCs: Planning, Promise, and Pitfalls in 2023’ five eminent panelists from the legal industry got together to discuss their plans and priorities for the upcoming year.

These leaders from the legal-tech-ops space came to the forefront and highlighted key issues legal teams and in-house counsel will be grappling with as we move into 2023.

The discussion largely centered around the new context and constraints within which legal teams will be operating, and how they can then navigate and restructure to continue to create value.

From using farm analogies to guide resource restructuring to keeping team morale and satisfaction at the center of their plans, the discussion was a surprisingly refreshing take-on strategy for what is likely to be an economically difficult year.

An important undercurrent for the entire discussion was how legal teams will be utilizing technology to stay afloat and get ahead. Having deployed large-scale contract management tools themselves, the panelists outlined realistic expectations, best practices to evaluate vendors and steps you can take to prepare, before deploying any CLM technology.

The hot topic of artificial intelligence was also broached, the panelists talked about the kind of benefits they are currently reaping from AI in contracting, what is the art of the possible and how can you demystify and un-complicate this discussion in your own organization.

Overall, the panel discussion had many real-world, applicable takeaways for in-house legal teams. The top few are listed here:

  1. How legal teams will be investing their scarce time and resources in a time of economic uncertainty
  2. How you can align investments in legal with the enterprise’s overall strategy
  3. How are law departments seeing CLM impact legal operations beyond contracting
  4. Techniques for creating a compelling ROI for CLM investment
  5. How legal team composition will change as the economic uncertainty in the overall market grows
